I like reading short stories, and this trio from best-selling writer Tom Winton are some of the best. Of the trio -- "Movin' On", "The Voice of Willie Morgan" and "Squandered Prayers" -- my personal favorite is "The Voice of Willie Morgan". All three are about family -- troubled families, to be exact -- where tempers flare and alcohol flows (never a good combination; rather like trying to put out a fire by throwing gasoline on it). Yet people do break free and triumph, and sometimes, at least in a son's imagination, a verbally abusive dad who's dead comes through a champ for his son.

Mostly about dysfunctional families. Somewhat depressing if nothing else. Lots of cursing. A so-so reading experience for me at best.
I'm hungry for another novel from Tom Winton, but this was a good temporary fix.
Read this guy.....read him all up!
Beautiful, emotive and fast paced short stories. Made me pause a little and reflect on life.

Three short stories from a student of human nature. Well written and entertaining.
I've read Beyond Nostalgia and enjoyed Winton's style before. This little trio of stories is well-honed and I can hear the author's voice loud and clear. I'm sitting on his porch, drinking a scotch on the rocks, as he recalls memoir style. My favourites are the first and last stories. I could read this sort of stuff all day, it's soothing like honey. Tom Winton's voice delivers perfectly.
I enjoyed all three of the short stories in this book. The tales are entertaining and eye opening looks into the often dysfunctional lives of the characters. I highly recommend this book. The stories are quick reads that are guaranteed to hold your interest right to the last sentence.
