The Execution The Wintergrave Chronicles Book 1 edition by Sharon Cramer Sharon Cramer Romance eBooks
The Execution by Sharon Cramer is a historical thriller about twin brothers separated soon after birth who reunite over twenty years later on the eve of one brother’s execution.D’ata and Raven have lived very different lives. Both began as orphans. D’ata was left in a basket on the church steps, while a kindly man rescued Raven from his mother as she died from the plague. A rich family adopts the charming D’ata and he lives a life of privilege, while the moody Raven makes a family with his fellow orphanage children.
D’ata is destined for the priesthood and has the audacity to fall in love with a woman—his soul mate. A mercenary trainer takes the expert teenage huntsman Raven into his fold, and molds the boy into an assassin beyond compare. Life’s atrocity breaks one brother and scars the other beyond repair.
When D’ata visits Raven in prison to give last rites and hear the condemned man’s confession, the men realize they are twin brothers. During the long night before the execution, they share their life stories with the blood family they never knew they had. But the hangman will not be denied come morning, and Raven’s execution is nothing like what the brothers ever expected.
The Execution is an absorbing tale about love, profound despair, and hope. Each brother’s story was poignant and well told, making me smile in some places and wincing at atrocities in others. The descriptions had me wrinkling my nose at the reek and feeling the warm sunshine on my face. The story transported me into that rat-infested hole of a cell with the brothers; I sat on the chill stone floor with them and leaned close to catch every word.
Readers that enjoy absorbing storytelling about hopeful and heartbreaking young men who overcome awful odds would enjoy The Execution. Just be sure to bring a cloak to ward off the cold in Raven’s cell.

The Execution The Wintergrave Chronicles Book 1 edition by Sharon Cramer Sharon Cramer Romance eBooks Reviews
Ravan, the innocent orphan, the misbegotten pup of a dead whore. Ravan, the responsible, hard-working young lad, always ready to help. Ravan, the silent hunter, the skilled killer, the convicted criminal awaiting execution, molded by the hand of the King of Mercenaries.
D'ata, the priest, hopelessly in love with Julianne, his forbidden fruit. D'ata, always in trouble for some priestly misdeed, pushing the limits of his brotherhood farther and farther, until one day he explodes.
But D'ata's true brotherhood lies elsewhere, hidden inside the mysteries of his wayward doppelganger, each man broken by a fate that is not his own.
Twin brothers who couldn't be more different, the criminal path versus the holy path, until they come face-to-face for the first time on the fateful eve of the deathwatch.
This tale winds round and round, like an innocent thread that you twirl around your finger unthinking. But then the thread tightens, gripping your finger and it won't let go. That's what The Execution does… it grips you with a hand unseen, until it's too late.
I had a hard time putting this down to go to bed, even though I was dead tired. Just one more chapter, and then sleep, just one more. And one more. And one more again… I wish I could give this one ten stars!
Favorite quote "Curious how human nature draws more to a death than a birth. Let a child be born and a few significant loved ones will gather, but let a man die? Even his most remote acquaintance will show up."
Second favorite "When did I lose him? At what point did my childhood end?"
— Sharon Delarose
I really wanted to be able to leave a strong review for this book, but I just can't. The sheer amount of typos and grammatical errors sometimes made it a difficult read, and kept yanking me out of the story. I don't have an English degree, don't know all of the rules of grammar, but was still shocked by the extremely poor editing (or lack thereof).
The story sometimes dragged, and the author often over-described situations, feelings, events, and environments. Usually descriptions are a good thing, but it felt like the same situation was often repeated in three or four paragraphs, just using different wording. Most people who enjoy reading are smart enough to infer things, and do not need to be spoon-fed each detail over and over to make them understand.
The premise of the story was strong, and I did want to find out how it all played out. Some of the details towards the end were eye roll-worthy, but overall I enjoyed the story.
Constant incorrect historical facts, spelling and grammar errors, and repetition kept me from being able to give this book a solid four stars.
