I originally bought the book due to the description for it and when i actually had it appear on my Kindle I was more then pleasantly surprised by the gorgeous curvy plus size model for the lead female protagonist Morna. I was also delighted that this was a full length novel rather then a sub one hundred page novella. Its refreshing to read about a strong curvy female lead rather then the carbon copy stick women who populate the covers of most books of this genre. Curvy women are some of the most beautiful in the world so I am well pleased to be reading about ones adventures. Ms. Simone is a very talented author that I have just discovered with this work, I love the way she describes things and will actively seek her other books in hopes that they are as awesome as this one is. I say is because i am only about 42% of the way through it having just started it today. I heartily recommend this book to any romance or adventure fan, you will not be disappointed. You do not have to like curvy women to enjoy it, as it is a very good book above and beyond that particular point. I look forward to reading Ms. Simone's other works and hope she continues writing for a long long time.Tags : Morning Song [Susan Simone] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I was lucky enough to read this book before it came out and I'm glad I did!
Morning Song is the story of Morna, a young woman who acts as mystic to a rural community that desperately needs her for healing, mid-wiving and once a year when the time comes to heal the terrible damage done to the local women. Morna has been here for a long time and is very in tune with her community. She ministers to each of her patients with great knowledge and forethought having learned from the mystic that came before. But for all of her capable and healing gifts, all of her ritual and spell-craft she is still very alone.
Late one night her friend Marc and his brothers bring an injured man to her, shot with three arrows and beaten. He is a mystery and Morna invests herself in healing the stricken man, battling the fever and infection with all of her knowledge and in time she learns his name is Arrick. Arrick is a good man and he soon falls for the stubborn and unconventional woman who healed him. While helping her with her healing he works to show her her own beauty and the light within that has enchanted him. He's in for quite the battle as he faces not only Morna's own crippling self-image but her past and the terrible truth of the community in which she resides, a fact that unsettles him deeply.
He will have to do his work quickly as Arrick himself has a secret past and only so long to resolve it.
Morning Song is really beautiful book that manages to offer a great plus-size character in a romantic light without beleaguering her with the usual tropes. Instead Morna is strong, real and more than capable of handling herself. It's an ability she needs in her world, not only to protect herself, but the women of her community who have long been victimized by the men. Resigned to her fate as much as she enjoys the work she never bargained for Arrick who is just as stubborn, quite determined to take her hand and ready to lead her away from the more more nightmarish aspects of her world. Neither of them knows quite what is in store as they face Arrick's own secrets and it's an adventure that challenges them both in so many ways.
Simone clearly knows A LOT about being a midwife, healing and creating a believable pagan post-apocalyptic world. All of the real details are there and wrapped in some really wonderful atmosphere. Reading this book has been a treat from start to finish and it's well worth the investment, dark bits included.
Morning Song is the second book I've read by Ms. Simone. I HAD to read another of her works because she is such a great writer. Her characters are well written, truthful, fun and endearing. This book provided so many subtle nuances that make you go "Hmmm" it's wonderful. Such an enjoyable read! Please take the time to read it and see for yourself.
I thought this book was amazing. ..I love when the heroin is strong and not all wimpy...I hate when they portray a bbw female as desperate. .
Very good book, enjoyed reading it.
After a few chapters, it becomes quite clear that this is a romance novel, which is something I usually do not read. But the fantasy world is well built, and the characters so engaging that I was able to enjoy the story for its own sake and even root for the two main characters to make things work. The main protagonist is Morna, a mystic and healer who oversees the people of a tiny farming village who either go in awe and fear of her, or lust over her because she is an unattached woman in a world where that means she is fair game to any "Free Man" who wants to make use of her. Hers is a bleak world, but she is a powerful person and capable of fending for herself. Something unusual begins to happen though, when some farmers bring in a wounded soldier named Arrick. While Morna tends to him, she begins to feel more than a clinical interest in him. She has built a wall around her heart, much like the city-states in the post-apocalyptic world she inhabits, but Arrick is determined to tear this wall down and bring her out of her own small world. The writing is strong, the characters engaging.
How much did I like this book? Well, I got it for my first, read a few chapters, and then ordered the paperback so I could sit back and really enjoy it- what does that tell you?
This is a book about a future when the world is now something similar to medieval times. There are two main characters, Morna - a healer and mystic, and Arrick - a purported wounded soldier. The city-state where Morna resides is a desperate and bleak world for unattached women. The book is classified as a romance and it certainly has elements of love but the writing is much more than just a romance. The description of the times that Simone paints with her wordsmithing makes you feel like you are living in their world. Simone's portrayal of the main protagonists gives you an insight into their strength and character and even the secondary characters are "real" people. I really enjoyed this book and liked it so much I got another book by this author.
